Canada Week Two: Projects

We managed to get a lot of work done at the cabin with four guys in camp.  We put a new roof on the outhouse, and learned our way through the shingling process.  We also installed a new seat.  The green cushy seat of my childhood is no more.

We also put two boat loads worth of rock around the supporting posts of the dock.  Nate and Tony manned the boat, Matt and I swam around and place the rocks as best as we could.

Nate and Tony managed to re-plank the remaining old portion of the dock, which made it a lot nicer to walk on.

We also pulled the 12 foot 2" X 6"s off of the Manitimeig dock, replacing them with 8 foot sections of treated 2" X 6"s.

Tour of the Vineyards

Kristen and I headed off to Grand Junction on Friday to visit Katie & Jordan.  While we were there, we did the Tour of the Vineyards bike ride in Palisade.  We've done this the last 5 or 6 years, although we didn't make it last year.  We managed to only get one flat tire between the four of us, and the weather was perfect.

Afterward we did our traditional true tour of the vineyards via car, and picked up some wine along the way.

Saturday night we participated in a surprise birthday party for Katie's friend Brandy.  Everything was pulled off successfully, Brandy seemed genuinely surprised when she walked in the door.

We ate breakfast with the Sweets on Sunday morning, then headed back to Boulder.  Once again the aspen leaves were changing, making the ride quite scenic.

Canada Week Two: The Fish

The fishing on Manitimeig was good, Donley a little less so.  Matt did catch a massive 10lb+ Northern Pike near Wolf Lake Falls.  Nate and I hit Dilgard, and each caught a nice sized Large Mouth.

Last Weekend

I headed to the Shirley Mountains last weekend for the annual camping trip.  I'd just seen Tony and Nate a few weeks earlier during the Canada trip.  Even so, the five of us had an enormous amount of fun hanging out, drinking beer, re-telling stories for the thousandth time, and playing horseshoes.  This was our 10th consecutive year with the same group, hopefully we can keep it going another ten.  It snowed on us a little bit, but overall the weather was beautiful.

The fire in Boulder has been contained, it's no longer obvious that there is a huge forest fire very nearby.  A lot of people in the mountains lost their homes.  One different decision on our end, and this could have been a very different post.

Fire

Here's what the fire looked like from downtown yesterday:

One of my favorite bike rides goes right through the area where the fire started.  I'll be curious to ride that next week, and see what the damage looks like.

Kristen and I looked at a few houses up in that area, some we were fairly interested in.  Fire was always a concern, along with septic systems and well water issues.  Makes me happy we chose to live in town.  We do have a fair amount of ash collecting in the yard and on the patio.
